Westoe Colliery: The Songs and Sounds of our past
Funded as part of Historic England's 'History In The Making' scheme, this project brought young people at Autism Able together with a plethora of artists and historians to use a variety of creative methods and trips to explore our local history.
'History In The Making' aimed to empower young people in the north of England to explore and celebrate their local histories through new and different ways of place marking
The specialist neurodiverse education and wellbeing centre of the community group Autism Able stands on the original site of Westoe Colliery, St Hilda’s Colliery and the Harton Electric Railway.
The project involved a variety of work and amazing outcomes that allowed young neurodiverse people to really own their local industrial history.
A trip out to Woodhorn Museum
A new tour of St Hilda's Pithead and the old electric railway route - written and provided by North East Heritage Library
Music making sessions with my battery of accessible instruments, using graphic scores to interpret what we learned in our visits to heritage sites. These sessions also included the composers Jayne Dent and Ben Lunn
