Wheresoever They Are, In Any Measure
Funded by Sound and Music's 'Composer Curator' scheme, I wrote and delivered a project that helped young people with Autism Spectrum Condition interpret the life and legacy of Sunderland human rights activist John Lilburne. The result was a concert of music where are young people gave their own spin on what freedom meant to them in the lush surroundings of Sunderland's Holy Trinity Church.
The project was a combination of:
- Museum learning and education techniques
- Experimental music making with tape loops, audio diaries, gesture-controlled instruments and arduino based programming software.
- Working in a way that was inclusive of young people with varying needs.
The project was written to allow us to involve a wide range of young people with a variety of needs, many of whom had not been involved in music before.
To deliver the project I worked with my friends, the composers Ben Lunn and Jayne Dent. We also had support from Autism Able and their amazing staff, and from Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and Sound And Music.
